Backstory Asia tells the origin stories of Asian things. We want you to know exactly how these stories are made, and what to do if something on this site looks wrong.

How we use AI

We use AI tools at several steps of our work. AI helps us research a subject, gather sources, draft and edit text, and generate some of the illustrations you see on our pages. Photographs that come from a real photographer are always credited to that photographer.

A human editor reviews every story before it publishes. The editor checks the facts against sources, shapes the writing, and decides what goes live. AI assists the work. It does not replace the judgement behind it.

Accuracy

We work hard to get things right. Even so, history is full of gaps, sources disagree, and both people and AI tools can make mistakes. The content on this site is provided in good faith, for general information and enjoyment. We cannot guarantee that every detail is complete, current, or free of error.

Corrections

If you spot a mistake, please tell us at hello@backstory.asia. Tell us the page and what looks wrong. We read every report. When a report checks out, we correct the story.

Images

Some images on this site are AI-generated illustrations. They are made to evoke a subject, not to document it. Do not treat an illustration as a photographic record of a real place, person, or event. Real photographs carry a credit naming their source.
